TANAKA MIRAI Lab., an in-house innovation organization of TANAKA PRECIOUS METAL GROUP Co., Ltd., has created the musical work “Precious Metal Orchestra – An Auditory Tribute using Precious Metals Vol. 1” in collaboration with Sound Wellness Lab, the sound research institute of Della Inc., which is a long-established label known for music that is gentle to the body and mind. The work, which was composed entirely of the sounds of precious metals such as gold (Au), silver (Ag), and platinum (Pt), was released via various music streaming services on June 13, 2025.

TANAKA has been advancing a transformation of its overall business toward the year 2085, the 200th anniversary of its founding, with the aim of “creating a future that no one has ever seen before.” As part of this initiative, TANAKA launched TANAKA MIRAI Lab., an organization to lead the creation of new paradigms for a better future—from emergence to realization—and is conducting various research and development.

TANAKA MIRAI Lab. has focused on the “pure sound of precious metals” as one of its research themes. With the cooperation of Sound Wellness Lab, the sound research institute of Della—which has scientifically analyzed the effects of sound on human physiological and psychological states and translated that research into numerous musical works—TANAKA MIRAI Lab. launched a music production project using precious metal sounds in August 2023.

Utilizing the strengths of TANAKA, TANAKA MIRAI Lab. has created eight types of precious metal plates, including gold, silver, and platinum, for this project. After several months of prototyping and recording, it was able to successfully create sound sources.

Sound sources of various pitches were recorded by striking precious metal plates of different sizes (shown here is pure gold) mounted on the glockenspiel, which is a keyboard percussion instrument that produces sound by striking metal bars, with mallets.

The recorded pieces—arranged using sound sources that capture the distinct tone colors and resonances of each precious metal, including overtones beyond the audible range—are renowned masterpieces of classical music. Three tracks feature solo-instrument recordings, allowing listeners to appreciate the unique acoustic characteristics of pure gold, pure silver, and silver-copper (a silver-copper alloy), respectively. The final track is an ensemble piece that features a harmonious blend of pure gold, pure silver, silver-copper, yellow gold, and pink gold. The arrangement was handled by composer Mitsuhiro, known for his work on numerous healing music productions.

This release marks the first volume of the one and only “precious metal sound” series. The second and third volumes are planned for future release.

Once any metal produces a sound, it resonates for what feels like an eternity. This is likely due to its high purity. As a result, the sound spans a wide range, from the depth and weight of the low tones to the soft and radiant qualities of the midrange, and the sparkling brilliance of the high range—bringing a new dimension to the music. The world of metal must still holds endless possibilities.

■ Profile of Mitsuhiro

Graduated from the Department of Composition at Kunitachi College of Music in 1985. Founded the Nagano Music Research Institute in 1991. To date, he has released over 100 original CD albums, arranged more than 250 CD albums, and published over 20 music-related books. He is also dedicated to developing the next generation through teaching at Tokai University, Hachioji Music School, and Kunitachi Music Academy, and has also produced the in-flight relaxation music channel for Japan Airlines (JAL).
