Hydrogen Permeation Mechanism Using Palladium Membrane

Palladium is a metal with superior permeability to hydrogen only.

Using this property, it is possible to separate out just hydrogen from mixed gases through a palladium metal membrane. Being able to create high purity hydrogen like this, as the smallest possible atomic sieve, palladium is useful for producing hydrogen for fuel cells and for generating ultrapure hydrogen required when manufacturing semiconductors and LEDs.

Hydrogen molecules (H2) are absorbed and dissociated at the surface of a palladium metal membrane to generate hydrogen atoms (H), penetrating and diffusing into the metal.
